Children’s Dental Hygiene Month

February 11, 2022

Children's Dental ExamWondering if it’s safe to go back to the dentist during Covid? Absolutely it is!

At StayWell, we have taken extra precautions against Covid-19 to ensure everyone’s safety.  It’s a great time to schedule you or your child’s appointment now, in honor of February being National Children’s Dental Hygiene Month. Dental Hygiene Month is dedicated to promoting the benefits of good oral health to parents and children alike.

Prevention in oral health is key to a happy, overall healthy body. Children in general need to learn the proper ways to care for their teeth to ensure they avoid going to the dentist as much as possible.  It’s the only way!  Hygienists cannot stress enough, that what you do at home to take care of your teeth, is the best way to prevent disease like gum disease and cavities.  That being said, gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) has been linked to increased rates of complications, hospitalization, and deaths among patients with severe cases of Covid-19.

What you can do from home:

  • Start brushing teeth as soon as teeth begin popping through the gums, using a soft-bristle toothbrush
  • Brush twice per day for at least 2 minutes
  • Start flossing when teeth start to touch but if you want to form good habits, it doesn’t hurt to start earlier!
  • Help your children when they brush their teeth and floss, reminding them to pay attention to their back teeth.
  • Visit a dentist every 6 months for routine cleanings

Find fun ways to engage your children at home this month with activities, educational videos and other resources to make dental hygiene a positive and fun learning experience.
